LA: Seun Kuti Los Angeles Performances 6/19-21

(via press release)

Fela's youngest son, Seun Kuti is in LA this week along with the original Egypt 80 band continuing the tradition and legacy of his father's life and work.

In Brief: For those unfamiliar, Fela Kuti gave birth to a genre called Afro-beat upon returning to Lagos, Nigeria after visiting the states in the late 60's. Electrified by the black power movement and the sounds of James Brown, he founded his own sovereign state, called the Kalakuta republic, married 27 women at once to free them slavery, and made music that garnered international attention, mainly because of its truth telling nature regarding the socio-political state of international affairs in relation to Africa and its governments - corruption, incompetence, etc. Many speculated his death from AIDS in 1997 was the result of a long standing conspiracy to murder Fela. More than a million people attended his funeral.

Some of you may be familiar with the work of one of Fela's other sons, Femi, who breathed new life into the genre by incorporating electronica and touring the world throughout the late 90's and 00's. Now, Seun is re-invigorating the music with the same raw quality his father was known for. The show is not to be missed. Please come to one of the following in support of Afro-beat and its legacy. And please consider purchasing Seun's debut self titled album:

LA: 5/25 & 5/26 22nd Annual UCLA JazzReggae Fest

If you haven't already bought your tickets, its time to do so now. This years line up for the Jazz Day includes The Roots, Goapele, Amos Lee, and Dr. Lonnie Liston Smith (!!!!!!). I love The Roots and I adore Goapele, but Lonnie Liston Smith is a musical genius yo! I'm still trying to figure out if it would be to Stan-ish to bring a record (or 3) for him to sign.

Reggae Day will feature Stephen Marley, Mr. Vegas, Capleton, Rebelution, Alaine among others.

Tickets are:
$25/advance (one day)
$35 at the door (one day)
$45/advance (both days)

You can get your tickets at Ticketmaster. Don't dwadle!

Be sure to check out the afterparty at The Roxy on Sunset featuring Questlove on the 1s and 2s ALL NIGHT. Presale tickets are at Brown Paper Tickets. Get a $5 discount with a Jazzfest Ticket.
