Ted Kennedy Has Malignant Brain Tumor

Source

U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor, doctors treating him at Massachusetts General Hospital said Tuesday. Kennedy, 76, was hospitalized Saturday morning after suffering a seizure at his family's compound at Hyannisport, Massachusetts . "Preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma in the left parietal lobe," according to a statement from the doctors treating the senator.

Malignant glioma is the most common primary brain tumor, accounting for more than half of the 18,000 primary malignant brain tumors diagnosed each year in the United States , according to the National Cancer Institute.  White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said President Bush was "deeply saddened" by the news and would keep the senator in his prayers. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said was confident Kennedy would get through his health crisis. "Sen. Kennedy has been a fighter all his life," she said.  "He is a fighter -- a fighter for our children, for our workers, for our seniors. He is a champion fighting for health care for all Americans. "I know that that fighting spirit will hold him in good stead in the challenge that he faces now."

Kennedy had surgery in October to clear his carotid artery in hopes of preventing a stroke. In recent days, the powerful Democrat appeared in fine health. On Friday, he took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new maritime learning center in
New Bedford, Massachusetts . He suffers chronic back pain from injuries suffered in a plane crash in 1964.

The usual course of treatment for Kennedy's type of tumor includes radiation and chemotherapy, said a statement from Dr. Lee Schwamm, vice chairman of the Department of Neurology at
Massachusetts General Hospital , and Dr. Larry Ronan, primary care physician at the hospital. "Decisions regarding the best course of treatment for Sen. Kennedy will be determined after further testing and analysis," the doctors continued.

"Sen. Kennedy will remain at
Massachusetts General Hospital for the next couple of days according to routine protocol. He remains in good spirits and full of energy." Kennedy has represented Massachusetts in the Senate since 1962. He is one of only six senators in U.S. history to serve more than 40 years. He is known as a liberal champion of social issues such as health care, family leave and the minimum wage.

Senate Democrats and Republicans were in their weekly closed policy lunches in the Capitol when the news of Kennedy's diagnosis broke.
M ajority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada announced the news to his Democratic colleagues. The wind was taken out of the room, said one senator. There was "stunned silence," said another. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, a close friend of Kennedy's, released a statement saying, "Ted Kennedy has spent his life caring for those in need. Now it's time for those who love Ted and his family to care for them and join in prayer to give them strength."

New Jersey Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg said, "Ted Kennedy makes the Senate the place that it is, and has for so many years."

Al Sharpton Arrested at Sean Bell Protest In NYC

Super Perm is trying to make it happen. Good for him!  I'm glad he's not just talking and getting a touch up. I'm glad he decided to take REAL action against the not guilty verdict for the officers who murdered UNARMED Sean Bell on his wedding day. The police have been going unpoliced for far too long. Whats worse is that Nicole Bell has been getting harassed since then and even received a prank phone call from the police union saying "ha ha" they day the verdict was read. All I'm saying is if that had been an unarmed white man murdered on his WEDDING DAY, President Bush himself would have intervened. Hats off to all those demonstrators who stood up for the injustice that plagues our justice system disregard for black lives. Read more below...

NEW YORK - The Rev. Al Sharpton was among dozens arrested Wednesday as demonstrators blocked traffic at the height of the evening rush hour to protest the acquittal of three detectives in the 50-bullet shooting of an unarmed black man on his wedding day. Police said 216 people were arrested, including Sharpton, two survivors of the shooting and the slain man's fiancee. They lined up and put their hands behind their backs as police arrested them on disorderly conduct charges.

Sharpton, the two survivors and the fiancee were released about four hours later, said Sharpton spokeswoman Rachel Noerdlinger.
The demonstrators prayed, sang and chanted slogans including "no justice, no peace" as they converged on six heavily used bridges and tunnels that carry traffic to and from Manhattan island. The protests were part of a coordinated campaign to urge federal authorities to investigate the shooting of Sean Bell in November 2006.

The three officers were acquitted of state charges last month in a case that from the start ignited protests and spurred criticism of police tactics. One of the officers fired 31 shots, emptying his clip two times in a few short seconds.
Sharpton has said Wednesday's "pray-in" protest was a preview of potential future demonstrations designed to paralyze the city.

"We're going to keep coming until we get federal indictments. It's wrong," said Frank Rodriguez, a military veteran who brought a homemade model of the shooting scene to the Brooklyn Bridge rally, which began outside police headquarters in downtown Manhattan.
U.S. attorney spokesman Robert Nardoza said the case was under review, but he declined to comment further about a possible federal case.

Sharpton, shooting survivors Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield, and Bell's fiancee, Nicole Paultre Bell — who legally took his name after his death — linked arms as they blocked a street at the Brooklyn Bridge's base.
They were trailed by at least 200 demonstrators who kneeled in prayer in the road and counted to 50 in a reference to the barrage of gunfire that killed Bell.

The arrested protesters were expected to be issued tickets for misdemeanor offenses.
On the opposite side of lower Manhattan, an ethnically diverse crowd of about 80 demonstrators chanted, "We're fired up; we won't take it no more," and held hands as the Rev. James E. Booker Jr. blessed the crowd. "Don't let Sean Bell's death be in vain," said Booker, pastor of St. John A.M.E. Church in Harlem.

After marching to the Holland Tunnel behind a "Stop the Brutality" banner, the protesters blocked two entrances to the tunnel as some sang the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome." Demonstrators who moved to the sidewalk applauded each time one of their fellow protesters was arrested. Drivers mostly waited patiently. "I disagree with doing anything illegal, but, hey, this is what makes America great," said Aaron Hanson, a passenger in a car waiting to get into the tunnel. "If this is what people really need to do to make a statement, it's what they should do."

A few miles uptown, some protesters were arrested after blocking traffic into midtown Manhattan on the Queensboro Bridge, while about 200 people rallied near the entrance to the Triborough Bridge in Harlem.
A heavy police presence initially stood by during the demonstrations, allowing the protesters to march unimpeded to the bridges and tunnels where they stopped traffic. Mayor Michael Bloomberg had pledged to "make sure that everybody's rights are protected and that the law is obeyed."

The racially polarizing case has raised questions about police use of deadly force in minority communities. Bell was black, as are two of his friends who were wounded in the shooting; the officers were black, Hispanic and white. Bell crossed paths with the undercover detectives as he was leaving his bachelor party with friends. The officers testified they feared for their lives after Bell and his friends got into a testy exchange with another patron and appeared to be going to retrieve a gun; Bell's friends testified the detectives fired wildly and without warning at Bell's car. No gun was ever found.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Wednesday that the police department was continuing to examine the possibility of punishing the detectives.

Parts of "60 Minutes" Broadcast Blocked in Alabama

This is scary. Its time to wake the fuck up America! This is the beginning of the end. Censorship and media intimidation aren't even the beginning. Our rights are being stripped from us one by one. I hope we realize this before its too late. The power of the collective needs to be harnessed soon.

Soviet America

Now, let me tell you what has been going on. As 60 Minutes was putting its show together, the White House put pressure on CBS -- the parent company -- to kill the show. Over the last few days, as word got out that the 60 Minutes show would air tonight, Karl Rove's associates began planting defamatory stories about journalists working on this story (see example here) and attacking the whistle-blower who came forward, Dana Jill Simpson. If you recall, Ms. Simpson testified, under oath, to Congress about Karl Rove's involvement in politicizing the DOJ. What you may not know, however, is that her house mysteriously caught fire and she was run off the road in the weeks leading up to her testimony. What you may also not know is that Governor Siegelman's house was broken into twice during his trial as was his attorney's office. Yesterday, the attacks on Simpson and journalists increased with a series of emails from the Alabama GOP. See Here.

Tonight was something truly unseen in US history. During the 60 Minutes broadcast and ONLY during the Don Siegelman portion -- the screen went black for Huntsville residents and Mobile residents. There are other reports of other locations, but I have not yet confirmed those. In Florida , a series of strange ads were running about the FISA bill and how Democrats are not tough on terrorism, apparently during the 60 Minutes hour and also right before 60 Minutes, but not after (still trying to confirm when the ads stopped running).

In other words, in the United States of America , a man is imprisoned for being a Democrat. When reporters attempt to get this story out, they are threatened and smeared. When all else fails, the public is not allowed to see the news. This is not acceptable and I -- as a US citizen -- demand that Congress investigate this series of blackouts immediately. Any company involved in this must have their FCC license pulled too. Karl Rove may be gone from office, but he clearly is not gone from power. So long as his buddy, George W. Bush, continues to occupy the White House -- what used to be a symbol of how a nation could both be governed and be free -- we will continue toward abuse after imperial, no Soviet, abuse against us. That too is unacceptable.

Contact Congress now, non-stop, and demand a full investigation into what caused this selective blackout. You can find your member's contact information here. If no investigation happens ... If no one in Congress responds, then you will know finally and fully the ugly truth: we are no longer a democracy . And if we are no longer a democracy, then presidential election can fix the problem, because something that no longer exists cannot be fixed. Sadly, at that point, the only path left to us is the one I most abhor.

Update:

We are now being told that it was a technical issue with CBS in New York:

We apologize that you missed the first segment of 60 Minutes tonight featuring "The Prosecution of Don Siegelman."

It was a techincal(sic) problem with CBS out of New York . We are working with them right now to see if we can re-broadcast the segment.
Please be patient with us during this time. We are doing our best to correct the problem.

Excuse me? Are they trying to tell us that a glitch in New York ONLY happened in Alabama -- which is the topic of the 60 Minutes broadcast -- and ONLY during the Don Siegelman segment? Are you kidding me? We have selective prosecution and now we have selective news delivery?

Update II:

read it here.

Escaped Tiger Kills One Man and Mauls Two in SF

Lordy Lordy! Can you even imagine?! I live in L.A. and if I ever came face to face with a TIGER, a real live tiger in the CITY, I think I wouldn't even know how to handle the situation. They don't give you tiger protection training in school. I know what to do if I catch on fire, drink some poison, or get touched in my "no-no" area, but what the hell do you do if you see a tiger? Is it even wise to run? Is it even worth it?  I used to live in the bay and I can't imagine getting off at the Embarcadero stop on the BART to learn that there's a tiger that escaped from his cage in the zoo. I wouldn't even leave the tunnel. I don't care if its 5:30pm on Christmas Eve and I don't have ANY presents for anyone. I'd just have try my luck in Emeryville or something.  Luckily the escaped tiger didn't leave the zoo upon its escape, but can you imagine the ruckus that would have caused?! Thats some cartoon, Darkwing Duck drama that I just can't stand for. I'd hate for President Bush to have to add tigers to the axis of evil. Tsk tsk tsk.

Escaped Tiger Kills Man at SF Zoo

SAN FRANCISCO -- A tiger escaped from its enclosure in the San Francisco Zoo on Christmas Day, mauled one man to death and left two others seriously injured. The tiger was shot and killed by police after it charged officers.

A police spokesperson said the zoo was evacuated after the incident, which occurred late in the afternoon near the Terrace Cafe at the east end of the zoo. The zoo was being searched for other possible victims Tuesday evening, even though there were no missing person reports. Police helicopters circled the area with searchlights as ambulances stood by.

Police set up a perimeter around the zoo and searched on foot for other possible victims.

Initially, officials believed that up to four tigers in the same enclosure may have escaped, but only one actually left its pen, said San Francisco Fire Department Lt. Mindy Talmadge.

Officials said that the same tiger, a Siberian named Tatiana, had mauled a zookeeper in front of horrified visitors about a year ago. Visitors then told zoo officials that the female tiger grabbed the keeper's hands in its claws and was pulling her. A second keeper freed the employee from the tiger's grip. The almost-daily public feedings were suspended.

"Nothing like this has ever happened before," Lora LaMarca, the director of marketing and public relations for the zoo, said at the time.

The tiger was kept in a grotto with a moat 20 feet deep and 15 to 18 feet across, surrounded by a 20-foot wall. Officials could not immediately say how the animal escaped, nor do they know precisely how long it was out of its enclosure.

At a little after 5 p.m. Tuesday, when there were as few as 20 visitors at the zoo, police received a report of a tiger on the loose, said Police Sgt. Steve Mannina. Four officers responded and soon encountered a zoo employee in a golf cart who said there was a wounded patron in front of the tiger grotto. That man died of his injuries, Mannina said.

Police then started to search for the tiger, finding it at the zoo's Terrace Cafe, about 300 yards from the tiger enclosure, where they encountered a visitor with blood on his face. They approached with their emergency lights on.

"The tiger sees them, then goes back on the victim and continues to maul the victim," Mannina said.

"Then the tiger charges the police officers and four fired," killing the animal.

The victims, who were in their 20s, were not zoo employees. No other details about their identities were immediately available.

Mayor Gavin Newsom was "deeply saddened" about the incident, said his spokesman, Nathan Ballard. "A thorough investigation is being undertaken to uncover all the facts and to understand how this tragedy could have occurred," Ballard said.

The zoo entrance was blocked Tuesday evening near San Francisco's Great Highway and adjacent to Ocean Beach and the densely populated Sunset District.

The two injured men were being treated at San Francisco General Hospital, where the nursing supervisor said they were in serious but stable condition. Officials said the zoo will be closed today out of respect for the victims. It is typically open every day of the year.

12 year old shot and killed in Camden, NJ

I understand that the murder of a young black man is Camden, NJ is unshocking to most Americans, but a 12 year-old boy caught up in that violence is a bit much for me to stomach. Someone needs to be held accountable for this. Where were his guardians? What was he doing out of the house past 9pm? Was his killing intentional? If so, who would want to slaughter a pre-teen? These are questions that NEED to be asked and ANSWERED in this case. It really takes a village to raise a child. This one slipped through the cracks and ended up losing his life because of it. We are going to keep losing our children to senseless violence if something doesn't change.

Boy's Murder Shocked a Violent City

CAMDEN, N.J. - Murders are not shocking in this city once called the nation's most dangerous. But even this place is shaken by the killing, still unsolved after five months, of a 12-year-old boy whose skull was so badly shattered by bullets that an undertaker used a top hat to hide the damage.

James Martin Coleman was in the back seat of a car parked at a housing project about 11 p.m. on the Forth of July when he was struck by the spray of bullets. One resident of the neighborhood heard about 30 rounds.
As detectives seeking the boy's killers comb this desolate community of boarded-up row homes and litter-strewn lots, there are as many questions about the way he lived as how he died: Why was a child who just turned 12 on the street, unsupervised, after 11 p.m? And where did the boy who once talked of becoming a preacher get the $500 detectives found stuffed in his front pocket?

Martin was the youngest of the 42 people killed in Camden this year. Camden, a city of 79,000 in the shadows of Philadelphia, was once a manufacturing dynamo, home of RCA and a plant that canned Campbell Soup. But it has been on a decades-long losing streak with disappearing jobs, deepening poverty and political corruption. By the time James — "Pee Wee" to his father's relatives and known as Martin by his mother's family — was born in 1995, the city was among the nation's poorest.

Today, it's so tough that the Rev. David King, pastor of Community Baptist Church, pours motor oil on the stoop next door to his church, the only way he knows to keep drug dealers from sitting there. "Everything is broken down," said King, whose church, several blocks from the spot where Martin was killed, is a worn brick building with a tree poking through its roof. A bullet hole punctures the one stained-glass window not protected by wire mesh. "How can a child do better if their environment stays the same?"

Neighborhoods are dotted with low-budget memorials to murder victims, sometimes more than one to a block: spray-painted bed sheets hung across boarded-up windows and rows of empty liquor bottles lining the sidewalk in silent tributes to the dead. Loresha Gaines, now 28, was 15 and in foster care when she got pregnant with Martin. She moved in with a friend who introduced her to alcohol and marijuana. She said she was often left alone and in charge of her older friend's six children. While pregnant, Gaines said, she was beaten by drug addicts. Through it all, she talked to the baby growing inside her. Martin was his mother's best friend. He was always giving money to homeless people, even though his own family was barely scraping by, said Gaines, who is unemployed. He talked of becoming a preacher and was happy to earn spare change running errands for neighborhood elders.

His father, Michael Coleman Sr., has other children from different relationships and was in prison for much of Martin's life. He was doing time for armed robbery when his son was killed. Martin spent much of his life bouncing between the homes of his mother's and his paternal grandmother, Jackie Coleman. Jackie Coleman said the young boy never did anything worse than break his 8:45 p.m. summertime curfew. She did not realize that sometimes he was staying on the streets overnight. "We just didn't know he had gotten that far," she said.

Martin was murdered in Branch Village, the public housing complex where his maternal grandmother, Monica Gaines, spent part of her childhood. Gaines, who now lives in Tampa, Fla., doubts it's possible to grow up in Branch Village now without using or selling drugs.  "It reminds me of Sodom and Gomorrah," she said. "It will suck you in." Her cousin, Nat B. Woodward, said he tried to talk to Martin when he saw him hanging out in the projects, but the boy would not listen. He said he also called Gaines to tell her that Martin was on a dangerous path. Woodward's hunch was that the boy, then just 11, was already working for drug dealers. Authorities and some Branch Village residents say there were indications that Martin had become involved in the drug trade: Graffiti on a wall marked "his" corner.

Martin's mother and paternal grandmother said they don't think he was selling. After all, he never came home in expensive new clothes and was always asking them for a few dollars. Still, Martin's mother and grandmothers knew things were troublesome enough for Martin that they plotted to get him out of the city, at least for the summer.

Monica Gaines came for a visit in June intending to take him back to Florida with her, and Jackie Coleman had raised $500 from relatives to help Gaines feed and clothe Martin in Florida. The boy did not want to go. Just before his grandmother was to go south, Martin skipped a family meal in the suburbs and took a bus back to Camden.

Gaines said she told Martin she was worried about him, recalling her words: "Martin, please don't make Grandmom come back to New Jersey to bury you."

It's not clear how Martin spent the two days or nights before he died. His two primary caretakers thought he was with the other one. They now suspect Martin deceived them both, turning off the ringer on his grandmother's phone so his mother could not get through and grabbing the $500 in Florida trip money she kept on top of the television.  On the night Martin died, authorities said, the boy waited out evening thunderstorms in an old Oldsmobile left in a parking lot. They say friends came and went from the car that night.  Around 11 p.m., a group of people walked up to the car and someone fired an automatic rifle.

Word spread quickly. Before police got to her home to notify her, Loresha Gaines' father was banging on her door.

"Daddy, please don't tell me Martin's dead," she remembered telling him.  The day before Thanksgiving, investigators went with her as she knocked on doors in Branch Village, begging people for information. "I want someone to come forward and speak up," she said. "That's all I'm asking for, mother to mother."  Gaines clings to what she's heard on the street: The Oldsmobile had been used in a robbery, then sold, and the victim was out for revenge and opened fire not knowing who was inside.

Acting Camden County Prosecutor Joshua Ottenberg said investigators have not ruled out that theory. Gaines said she sometimes blames herself for what happened to her son, but like so many people in her city she sees tragedy as inevitable.

"It was going to happen anyway," she said. "Because it was God's will."
