Leather Talks to…Dwele

By: Brandelyn N. Castine
Sketches of a Man, the new release from soul artist Dwele gives his fans more than they expect. With his fourth release, Dwele explores and examines the hidden sides of his personality and talents, giving fans a true glimpse into the man and the artist.
Explain how you chose the name “Sketches of a Man” for your album?
I looked at it as a chance to show off some of artwork…some of my sketches
So you’re an artist?
Yeah, I try to be.
Describe how you felt when you learned you were nominated for a Grammy?
It felt great; I wasn’t expecting it at all. The news came out of the blue. In fact, I almost crashed my car when I found out.
So wait, you were driving when you found out?
Yeah, I was in the car and my manager called and was like, “D, I hope you got a suit in your closet because you’re going to the Grammy’s.” I had to slam on the brakes, pull over, but I still didn’t believe it until I got home and looked at it on line.
Your first album “Rize” created the buzz for your sound, would you self release an album again?
Yes, I’d love too. Right now, I’ve got a great concept I’m sitting on. It’s different and I’m not sure that the label would understand it so I might have to release that myself.
Who are some of your musical influences both in soul and hip hop?
Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Miles Davis,
Roy Ayers, John Coltrane. Then on the hip hop side, I love everything from A Tribe called Quest to the Fu Schnickens to Jay-Z.
When did you figure out that you wanted to be a singer/writer?
Around 98, 99, after the “Rize” album. That album was a mix of vocals and rhymes, but when it came out, I saw that people were more so interested in the vocals side, so once managers started getting involved and we started shopping deals, I figured, I was in it for real
So you’re saying that you figured you wanted to be a singer after you recorded and released your album?
Well, yeah, the first album was a mix of both singing and rhymes. So when it came out and people were really feeling the vocal side, I figured that was what I should focus on.
Okay, that makes sense. So now that you are an established singer/songwriter is there anyone that you would love to write for, do a duet with, or sing a hook for?
Badu…I would love to do some new age, space age, 80’s shit with Badu. Some type of track that people would hear and say that’s not Dwele on the production…but it is.
How do you feel about the current state of soul & R&B?
Soul is coming up, it is getting a lot more play time on the radio and online and the marriage of soul and hip hop is growing, and that’s a good thing. It could be better though. It could be getting more radio play without having to have hip hop with it… but it’s good.
What is something your fans would surprised to know about you?
Hmm… that’s a hard one, I think they’d be surprised to know that I am more than just a laid back dude…that’s just one side of me, I got a rock star side that comes out every once in a while.
Okay, so what’s your favorite song to perform?
“A Pimps Dream”, “Flapjacks”….especially “Flapjacks.”
I fell out when I first heard that track…
Yeah…that song shows you my Rock star side. (laughs)
Use one word to describe your musical journey thus far.
Hmm, Unpredictable….
If you weren’t singing what would you be doing?
I would definitely be doing something creative. I do photography so I could see myself doing that or sketching, something like that. Or if I had to do a regular nine to five, I would still be a travel agent at AAA.
Do you still get discounts with AAA?
Yes because I have videos and albums out, not because I used to work there.
Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans?
I appreciate all of your support and we are going to do it bigger and better in 2008!
